Taught writing courses at E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and advised students on academic and career choices. Served as adviser to the Ohio University chapter of Associated Press Sports Editors, a group that promoted excellence in sports journalism. Served as co-director of the 2014 and 2015 High School Summer Journalism Workshop at Ohio University and of the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists for 2013-2016. Also, co-founded a diversity series called “90 Minutes.”

Lead writer for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Served as a liaison for the district on a several initiatives for its Strategic Communications Department; wrote feature stories about students, faculty and administrators.

Established and coordinated company’s internship program. Evaluated the applications of more than 2,000 candidates over five-year period, work that resulted in the selection of more than 120 interns during that period. Filled in for site reporters and developed long-term assignments for interns and for the organization. Represented the company at major conferences for journalists of color, at journalism seminars and at job fairs. Wrote features, columns and game stories

ASSISTANT EDITOR: The Seattle Times

Oversaw the night operation for The Times. Supervised the copy desk and helped train, manage and hire copy editors. Did performance evaluations for copy editors as part of a four-person management team  

SPORTS EDITOR: The Pittsburgh Tribune Review

Managed the daily operations as a section editor for “The Trib” with its start-up edition in the city of Pittsburgh. Hired editing and writing staff, and established coverage plan for the section as part of newspaper’s senior management team

SPORTS EDITOR: The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Indiana
April 1991-May 1998
Managed the daily operations as a section editor for The Journal Gazette, the largest of two newspapers in Fort Wayne. Wrote column and managed a staff of about 15 full-time and part-time employees. Hired editing and writing staff, and established coverage plan for the section as part of newspaper’s senior management team
